Zanussi Jet System 1200 XC FJS 1225W - press buttons machine goes off!?

When we press the on/off switch, then start to select the programme, spin speed etc, the machine goes off. Sometimes it takes about 20 goes to make it start and it helps if we creep up on it and surprise it!
