Don't hit starter they have ciramic plates and will shatter. Sounds like battery main earth cable to engine block . Try connecting one jumper lead from battery neg to good earth point on engine block .or if advanced tech ,do a voltage drop test on engine block to battery positive .

I have had my 2001 transit for 4 months or so and this has happened twice now. On both occasions the starter did absolutely nothing when the key was turned as though the battery was dead. On both occasions the battery was fine. The starter motor seems to sieze up. When this happens not even an extremely high current will turn it and it must be removed and freed up manually, greased liberally and replaced. Alternatively it must be replaced. Annoying!

sounds like the starter motor is sticking, try hitting the starter motor gently with an hammer of heavy spanner, then get a new starter motor
