my ford escort has is very sluggist and lacks some power?any ideas please?

i have a ford escort van 1.8d 1997 it takes a bit to start first thing in the morning.also doesnt seem to have a lot of power and bit sluggish.
has anybody got any ideas?

have you checked acc cable?
most of the old school diesels lack of power was down to slack acc cable or out of adjustment.
service check and change the air and fuel filter
oil change
do cheapest first

powerless 1.8 at 80+

Replace the in-line fuel filter. Get a tune up.
