how can i find the fault with my 96 1.8 RSi clio?

the revs keep dropping and stuggles to move but the engine dosnt cut out. if i rev it hard it back fires, i get to about 40mph and then the revs drop again, the engine fluctuates when idle. (manual) i have checked the pluggs and leads and found no fault
