the glass cover needs to be screwed anticlockwise, two full turns, the bulb is also screw-in.

K, finally managed it. I twas anti-clockwise and it did move pretty easily in the end!! Put some really strong oven cleaner on it, left it a while iand went to neighbours to borrow jam-jar opening thingy. The one that is just a big rubber band worked easily as it could fit underneath the grill elements. Hurrah!

Either the book is wrong, or you're not employing an appropriate technique - well done though for reading the User Guide - few people do.
Grab the glass cover with a slightly damp cloth for better grip.
