My stop light comes on my peugeot 206 then the temperature gauge shoots up?

I was travelling to Sheffield and after approx 25 minutes the stop light started flashing and the temperature shot up to the top. Checked the oil and water and the car didn't seem over heated. Turned the engine back on and the temperature gauge went straight back down the stop light no longer flashed. This happened every 25 minutes of my journey. I continued to switch of the engine, wait a couple of minutes and re-start and it was fine. The same happened all the way home to Sunderland from Sheffield, but on travelling around Sunderland locally, everything seems fine.
