I have been chancing a similar problem with my HITACHI DVD/VIDEO recorder for several years. After taking it to a HITACHI service centre I was was informed that NO PROBLEM was found. But each time I put a DVD disc in the DVD drive I was informed that the disc was INCOMPATIBE, NO DISK was present o the DISK detection occurred. Recently verifying on mt PC, the NEW discs I purchased had no problems I again tried the exercise on the Recorder. Again a similar failure, one disc out of 10 initialised, the others failed. Changing to a different type of disc, -RW instead of +RW appeared to alter the situation. 5 out 7 initialised eventually. My conclusion it that the FIRMARE of the DVD Drive in the recorder requires up dating, Although this is a HITACHI recorder it use an LG drive. Checking the information available LG and Hitachi have so commercial agreement and the drives are produced by HLDT, but are distributed by LG.
Approaching LG UK they will deny any knowledge of the device. Apparently any device used by a third party is not recognised probably because the device is manufactured outside of the UK. Recorders are probably manufacture in ASIA thus the consumer is stuffed. If LG have followed Hitachi example the only dedicated Service Personnel can obtain the information and there first aim is to obtain revenue and so the consumer has to travel many miles to confirm that any changes are required. If the information is not available to the SP then the consumer again is stuffed
