Mend Singer 641 Sewing Machine Thread Breaking Tension

How can I fix my Singer 641?

The top thread on my machine keeps breaking. I've adjusted tension and loosened 'foot' but nothing seems to work. The needle seems to rub-up against the guide on the foot.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Might sound silly but have you put the needle in the correct way round, that is normally the only reason the needle would be rubbing on the foot unless the presser bar is out of alignment which is unlikely unless it it is loose.
