I have a peugeot 206v/reg diesal 5door manual h/back?

the speedo is not working , i have had a new censer fitted on the advice that 9/10 would fix the problem by peugeot i have been told that they need to take the gearbox off to solve the problem at a cost of £750p is there anything else that it could need instead of this expensive fix
