Why does my BT Freelance XD 1500 make siren sounds?

We have a BT Freelance XD 1500 triple handset pack and occasionally the main base handset starts making siren sounds for no apparent reason. You never know when it will happen it's totally random. Please help, my kids are scared to be left home alone in case it happens.
