Firstly, fuel gauge broken? Might be out of petrol.
Overheating? Any warning lights? Check fluid level.
I think they're the basics. Now the more usual stuff:
The lambda probe is possibly faulty - Go to garage or mechanically skilled friend (sorry to assume you're not in this circumstance, but you are asking the question so it's kind of obvious).
If it is an injector engine you could have an issue with a fuel flow meter, again, you'd need someone skilled.
Tell you what, the best thing to do is call the AA or RAC (auto recovery companies in my Great Nation)or somefink, if you're a member of course. They'll diagnose it and perhaps fix it, if they can't fix it then they'll tow you to someone who can. That's why they're very nice men.
