Mend Craftsman 536.881851 Engine Electric

Craftsmen Sbiw Thrower 8.5 HP Model #536.881851?

This is both an electric start and pull cord start engine. When attempting to start either way the gears lock up at exactly the same point making it impssible to pull the cord or use the electric start. I can turn the gears one revolution, but it will turn one and lock. Any suggestions?

If it will turn over with the spark plug removed the compression release is bad. If it's locking with a metalic clunk there may be damage somewhere. Remove the blower housing and look around the ring gear on the flywheel for broken or bent teeth. If there's nothing damaged there, it may be internal damage.
