Mend Central Heating Hot Water System

central heating hot but no hot water?

when i turn control to central heating and hot water i only get central heating but no hot water!!
i can get hot water when i turn control to hot water only!!
any ideas would be great thanks

thanx for reply..i have checked header and there seems to be plenty of water in it.
Boiler is a very old IDEAL VULCAN RS55 FLOOR STANDING DOWNSTAIRS BOILER.
Tank is upstairs in bathroom.
Not sure where to look next..Zone valve is next to pump wich is next to tank.
Once again any help would be great.

it could be allsorts, if a old conventall system ie hot water gravity heating pumped, firts thing I would check is the small header tank in the loft is there any water in it? but we need more info to give a good guess
