On my Sony freeview tv I have a SCART cable connected to my VHS recorder. I can't remember how I set it all up, but the SCART is bi-directional, and when my TV is tuned to a freeview channel the signal is continually transmitted to the recorder. Select auxiliary input on the recorder and voila!.
