How easy is insulating the loft?

I want to buy insulation from a DIY store to insulate my loft. Any ideas on the easiest way to then lay the insulation out bearing in mind there are not many places to stand in the loft. Is is possible to cover the floor just by throwing the insulation?
Any advise would be gratefully received.
Thank you

Roger's method is not standard - Loft insulation is usually intended to reduce heat loss through the ceilings of the upper rooms into the loft space - insulation against the tiles/slates does not achieve this - it just prevents the sun from warming the air space in the attic. It will not make much difference to household comfort or heating costs.

I bought the insulation rolls from Homebase the ones that have silver on one side, I then fixed them to the underside of the roof tiles this stops the wind from blowing in through the tiles so keeps the loft clean and 1 temp no matter if cold or hot

John has obviously done this job before - likely several times...

My plumber suggested to me that rather than lag the water tanks individually that I might consider building an igloo over the top and sides of them.

Wear gloves...

Buy the insulation pre cut to the width between your joists and make sure it is a minimum of 100mm thick.
Rig up an inspection lamp so you can see what you are doing.
Buy some 1" thick board that spans the joists so you can kneel or stand.
Tuck the new insulation neatly between the joists.
Lag the top and sides of any water tanks.
Dont tuck the insulation into the soffit space - the roof needs to breathe.
Don't cover any pod lamp fittings with insulation.
Wear a dust mask.
Don't insulate the rafters going up to the roof ridge - concentrate on the ceiling tops.
Finish off by having a shower and turning the heating OFF.
