my dyson dc07 sucks nicely but has started emitting a burning smell and then starts conking out

sounds as if the motor brushes have worn, had this myself, replaced the brushes, but as the wife had kept trying to use it. the motor had had it.
You need a New motor.
I could give you a web site to get one from cheap, but not sure if I am allowed to. So.
