How can I fix my Speed Queen (Model No. AA 5221) Washer?

{Speed Queen top loading automatic washer, model no. AA 5221}

After the water reaches the level I've selected with the timer knob, agitation does not begin. Instead, a screeching sound is emitted and smoke appears to discharge from the back of the unit. Machine spins and drains properly.
