My holden calais 93 is over reving?

sometimes when i start my car and accelerate, my car over revs up to 3-4 and has little power and the car barely moves, this gets better when i start driving down my street but also is a problem at times when taking off from traffic lights...it takes a bit to kick in and...vrooom!! help!
