Without hearing it. it would be difficult to diagnose exactly but if it comes on with a bang then the burner is clogged up with fluff and dirt basically it is building up gas in the chamber before lighting or the other problem could be that the pilot light is too small this will give the same effect. If you are with tbritish gas for your electric or gas you can take advantage of their one pound service offer the service will cure this fault
