Mend Murray 224110X8A Lawn Mower Crank

My murray push behind lawn mower will not stay cranked?

My murray lawn mower stopped working recently. It will crank but it will not stay cranked. Its a murray push behind lawn mower. The model number is 224110X8A. It was working but I did notice black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Please help.
