Thermocouples are cheap and easy to replace, try patioheaters4u.com web site, they have loads of help pages and stock generic spare parts for patio heaters

Need a bit more detail on how it's broken really.

Does it not light at all (No spark from the ignition)?
If so then it's the ignition refered to by peccavi above.

If it lights, but goes out when you try to turn it up to full, then it's very likely the thermocouple.

This is quite a handy page http://patioheaters4u.com/PatioHeaterTopRepairTips.htm

A Thermocouple is a simple heat sensor - two metals joined together produce an electrical voltage dependant on heat to provide a control signal. It's doubtful that your patio heater has a thermocouple.

You may have a piezoelectric ignition device - a spring loaded hammer strikes a quartz crystal when a button is pressed - a high voltage is produced and the spark from it lights the gas.

You can sometimes mend them (or use a regular gas or cooker lighter).

The second page of this link shows the inner workings of a piezo spark machine...

Good luck...
