A Thermocouple is a simple heat sensor - two metals joined together produce an electrical voltage dependant on heat to provide a control signal. It's doubtful that your patio heater has a thermocouple.
You may have a piezoelectric ignition device - a spring loaded hammer strikes a quartz crystal when a button is pressed - a high voltage is produced and the spark from it lights the gas.
You can sometimes mend them (or use a regular gas or cooker lighter).
