how do I open the foot pedal, there are two screws but one does not remove, the second can be removed but does not appear to serve any useful purpose. It is a Merritt model manufactured in France

You have not said what model Merritt you have but there are two standard types of foot control, one is a push button but I think you may have the clam type, if you have you will need to peel the rubber off the bottom of the control to get to the screw.
