how to top up pressure in boiler?

there is most likely a hose connecting the return pipe to the cold water supply pipe (a large pipe to a smaller one). if that's the case there will be a small handle or screw you can turn to let the water flow. i think the valve you are adjusting is the bypass, so be sure to close it most of the way down again.
