rover 2600 tappets sdi?

tappets are difficult to set on this engine-i found that you had to make sure the 2 dowels that mate cam box to head had to be checked every time cam box removed to make sure they were half in head and half in cam box [tap each up/down slightly whilst refitting cam box.]can you remove noise by removing each plug lead in turn if so it could be little end or cracked piston.
