Set the motor down on the ground and hold the trimming side of the machine up. At the bottom of the trimmer head is a star shaped piece. Grasp it firmly and turn it counter-clockwise, and unscrew it completely. then the spool will come out. Take approximately 20 ft of cord, find the middle of the cord and make a sharp crease in it. Hook the crease in one of the slots, and wind the spool, keeping the tension firm, and one side on each of the divider. temporarily snap the loine in the slots on opposite sides. place the spool back in the machine and thread the line out the holes, then pull the lines out of the slots. Trim manually to help start the machine. good luck
