How can I fix the mower blade engaging lever?

How can I fix the engaging lever where it will properly engage the blades? On pushing up the lever, it is very hard to egage the blades or they won't even catch at all. Seems that there should be an adjustment for this.
This is a murray 42 in. riding mower, about 5 years old and just recently started this lever problem.
