my mates got a 94 'M' 1.0 fiesta, with single point injection. When he first bought it he had trouble starting it from cold. A ford mechanic suggested he take the fuel pump fuse out ( in fuse box) then start the car as if its a carb model thats flooded i.e. foot to floor till it fires. Car would then start, but cut out as fuel was not being pumped. Then put fuse back in and start it again- worked every time. Don't touch the throttle or you'll flood it (again). Never had a problem when the engine was warm.
He then took the the small bore hose that runs from the manifold to a sensor on the bulkhead (in engine compt) and replaced that, it had gone 'soft' and was collapsing under the vacuum, he also cleaned the connections of the sensor. He hasn't had a problem starting it since last summer.
The ford mech said that the injection system fitted to this engine was a bit of a ford 'afterthought' and it doesn't have a very 'intelligent' control system, and with a worn engine (his has done 70k) it can't cope, hence the problems. It's a known problem, but no cure!
