Mend Carver Fire Stay Lit

how do i get my carver gas fire to stay lit?

just bought caravan with carver gas fire but it won`t stay lit gas is ok it ignites ok but as i slowly release the ignighter up to get the main burner to kick in the pilot goes out!! anyone got any ideas as to the probable cause?
