A bad earth connection on an indicator can't possibly make the lights come on - not in this universe or in any parallel universe. A bad earth on an indicator, if it happens, will stop the indicator from working it will not magically switch power to the headlights.
The indicator stalk on your car probably has a secondary function of flashing the headlights - this secondary headlight switch is the most probable cause of your problem... else...
You have an intermittent short between the indicator circuit and the light circuit (doubtful but possible). Put the indicators on and wriggle wiring harnesses while someone watches the lights for you.
