My mistake, the ignition should be ON (dash lights on, dont start engine) before holding down AS and switching on radio. There is no beep, when four dashes appear on display let go AS button and enter code as before.
If the radio comes on with the ignition you have to-
Switch ignition on.
Switch radio off.
Switch ignition off.
Switch ignition on.
Hold down AS button and switch on radio, release AS when four dashes appear on display.
Enter code.
Press and hold AS button until it beeps.
Let go button and radio will begin to scan for stations.
I should've checked the book instead of relying on memory!!
Hope it works this time, if it doesn't please post the model of radio.

Ignition off, hold down the AS button and switch the radio on. Wait for a beep then release AS button.
Now enter the 4 digit code using buttons 1 to 4.

For example, if the code is 3584-

press button 1 three times

press button 2 five times

press button 3 eight times

press button 4 four times

If you accidentally push a button too often and go past your number just keep pressing, it'll come round again.

Now press and hold the AS button until it beeps.
Job done
