can i wash cotton curtains with rubber backing in a washing machine

I've done it on a wool/delicates wash and then left to drip dry..but its always a risk dependent upon how old or perished the rubber is (if its real rubber anyways)..I'd try soaking them in the bath overnight with a little gentle detergent and then just hanging out to drip in good weather.
