Mend Engine Out Engaged

MTD Pinto engine cuts out when cutters engaged?

my mtd pinto engine stops when I engage cutters. Sometimes with revs it might go for a moment then stops. Engine appears to be misfiring too - any ideas please?

I own an MTD Pinto. The engine cuts out when engaging the cutters if (a) you are in reverse (b) the grass box is not properly engaged (c) you are not sitting on the seat. There is a safety switch for each of these. If there is a fault with the safety switch you could be doing all three things right and the engine still cuts out. The grass box safety switch is middle bottom of the panel behind the seat. A little hook on the grass box engages in it. The seat safety switch should be visible when you lift the seat.

got a brand new one this week and had the same problem.

Don't try to engage cutters too quickly, take your time and all is well

Hi again,

Just spoke to my husband - he says this could happen also if you haven't fitted the belt correctly - or the belt you've bought is not the right one ?
There are lots of pulleys etc and it has to be fitted the correct way.
I have a (basic) diagram of the belts and pulleys - it's double dutch to me but if you can read diagrams then maybe it would help so you can check that it's fitted properly?
if so, let me know and I'll email it to you.

Hi Linda
I found your question while searching on the same mower - and strangely that is the same problem that we have.
We have been buying belts from Halfords because they cost around £3-£5 each and the genuine belt online appears to be around £50.
My husband thought ours is cutting out because the belt is very slightly over tight.l
In fact, if we run the mower without blades engaged, it cuts the grass and after being in use a while the belt must stretch a little and then we can engage the blades.
If you are using genuine belts then maybe we have it wrong and there's another reason for this fault.
I have been trying to find a belt supplier at a decent price - so if you know one, I'd be grateful if you could pass it on.
Good luck!
