Cast iron guttering- is it easy to renovate?

I have leaky guttering that is heavily painted cast iron. Pipes are ok but it is leaking at the joints mainly. Is there a good way to make watertight? Should I clean and repaint or take down and paint strip? Can you recommend a paint system or type?
Or am I wasting my time...
Thanks in advance.
Simon.

Normally the joint is putty and a bolt. Remove old bolt by unscrewing with molegrips or cutting away. Make sure joint is dry and clean of old putty. Squirt in clear silicone and tighten back up with a new roofing bolt 30-40mm. Paint gutters with hammerite when dry.

Typically, the lengths of cast guttering were held together with a nut and bolt at the ends, and the water seal was formed with pitch soaked rope....naturally over time this has degraded, giving you those leaks. If you can cut the bolt away, you can get into the joint with a good squirt of silicone, but if this is impossible, use some self adhesive flashing tape over the inside of the joint. If you want to paint your gutters use black Hammerite - just make sure its a dry day! Personally, give me plastic anytime...!
