I have the problem twice. Once was a broken belt. I just replaced it with a rubber band. The second time was from the belt (now a rubber band) getting caught under the motor pulley. This time it was not broken but it (the rubber band) was getting old and dry so I replaced it again. All up and running.

You need to remove 4 screws ( from the black panel where the tape is) then lift it. You should be able to see two pulleys (1big ,1 small) directly under the panel.

Here is a site that offers the belts:

Jump to phonemate and it gives the belt as SCX6.2

How did you get to the place where the belt can be seen? I have found a site that sells the belts, but I haven't been able to figure out how to see where it is. Do the screws on the bottom of the machine come out? I have not been able to budge them.

I have found on our phonemate 8800 that would show an E3 error code had a broken belt on the tape drive motor. I am now trying to find a place to purchase this part that looks like a broken black rubber band.
