How can I fix my panasonic dmr e50 dvd recorder?

I have had this recorder for some time before I started using it but it cannot start. I have a dvd stuck in it and unable to open it and it does not start at all. When the recorder is switched on there is an indicator of an attempt to start but that is about it.
