Hi I have a classic 35 which suddenly started to appear to run very rich, puffs of black smoke coughing and spluttering. Plug is black and I cant see what could make it run like this any ideas please?
I fitted the new diaphragm only took 5 mins and now mower runs perfectly

I have tried without the filter and after cleaning it and still the same. I have found someone who says its the carb diaphragm so i have ordered anew one only 71p so worth a go

Check the air filter first - run the engine without it and see if the smoke clears.
