My washing machine trips out the electric when on spin cycle?

I have a Bendix BIW 105W washing machine (3 yrs old) it has an independent spin cycle which i use after every programmed wash. The drum has started making a grating noise (not loud) and before it can get up to spin speed it has started tripping out the electricity.

Sounds as if the bearings have failed and the drum has dropped. The grating noise is possibly the drum hitting and shorting out the heating element which is located between the moving stainless steel inner and the stationary outer drums. The problem will be worse when spin speed is selected and this seems to bear out by your description of the fault.

Changing bearings is an involved job, only attempt if you are mechanically competent.
As for changing the bearings.........
Power off, remove covers. Disconnect drive belt, remove drive pulley. Make a drawing of the wiring colours and arrangement.Remove heater, heater wiring, thermostat and wiring and pressure vessel if its attached to the backplate. Check if drum splits at front, rear or the middle. If the drum is a plastic welded one- ie one which doesn't split, then its game over. If it splits at front or middle, drum will prob. need removal from machine. This involves dismantling the suspension and damping system and removal of door seal and concrete weights. Undo the drum fixing system - either a clamping ring or a series of peripheral bolts and split the drum. If the drum splits at the rear, removal from machine probably not required. Remove the clamping system and pull off the rear plate. Seal and bearings will come away with the plate. Seal needs to be dug out with a suitable lever and the old bearings hammered out with a punch from opposing sides of the backplate. Refitting is, as they say, a reversal of the above process. Typical price of a seal and bearing kit - round ÂŁ20. If the drum is a plastic one, it may be possible to buy a complete drum half with the bearings and seal already fitted which will save you having to hammer the old ones out but it'll set you back about ÂŁ75. Being realistic, allow 2 days for the job.
Thats it in its briefest form. You do need to have significant spanner skills. If youre the type of person who works on their car, it would be no problem. If you're a novice, dont even go there, get a professional to do it, but its going to have to be a judgement call taking into account the high labour costs (at least ÂŁ120) and the condition and value of the machine.
