why have my cookers wires melted?

The wires in my electric cooker and the wires behind the cooker switch on the wall have melted and i dont no how this happened?? I was making a roast when i noticed smoke coming from the back of the oven and around the switch, along with a strange smell. i had been noticinga strange smell for a few weeks and cudnt find where it was coming from, didint think the smell was coming from the back of the cooker and the switch. Got a guy to look at it, and he said the cooker is a death trap, the cooker was second hand when i got it and i hav only had it a couple of months, does anyone know why this has happened and if theres anyway of fixing it. thank you.

Thanks for your advice, i only got the cooker a couple of months ago but it was second hand. I guess its pointless paying to get it fixed, gonna be safer for me just to buy a new cooker and switch. The wires are completely melted and when we took the switch off the wall there was a mighty stink coming from it. I havnt used the cooker since, too afraid, the wall switch had given me an electric shock the day before it started 'smoking'. Any ideas how much it will cost to get the wall socket fixed, the wires are melted bhind that as well. Any other advice you have on this i would be really grateful.

Please don't use the cooker anymore.....maybe the electrical supply wiring isn't thick enough, or the insulation has failed through age. Do get it checked out pronto - there's a high fire risk - and I don't know why the fuses haven't been blowing!
