If you have two switches controlling the light fixture, they are three-way light switches. Assuming that you wiring is correct, the problem is somewhere else. Depending on how the wires are run in the room, the problem might be in the light fixture. Replacing a switch shouldn't cause anything to blow unless the neutral wire was used in the switch by mistake. Either a neutral is wired in causing a short or the problem is somwhere else: Bad light fixture or even wires in the wall are breaking apart and touching. Your best bet may be paying for an electrician.

Switches are unlikely to "blow" unless they take more current than they're designed for - you have probably wired the new light incorrectly and need the services of an electrician.

The location of the switch is immaterial - how you wired the ceiling is the important thing.

When you say "two way switch" do you mean two switches controlling one light fitting or two switches on the same plate each controlling a separate light?

You may very likely have had a fuse blow or a breaker trip if a switch has been destroyed - but you don't mention this.

Take care...
