Mend Mercedes-Benz ML270 Diesel Tank Half

i have a mercedes ml 270 diesel how can i check the fuel gauge float ?

the fuel gauge wont show how much is in the tank above just over half a tank

just read if u unplug the plug just infront of the back passenger wheel well gauge will reset itself.
But will only work if diesel level in tank is not to high as this is what causes problem, over filling.
