how to fix sooted spark plug?

the spark plug on my mountfield mower, briggs and stratton sp47 is very sooty and is making it difficult to start, how can remedy this

clean the SPARK PLUG with a wire brush ,clean the AIR FILTER SPONGE if still runs black sooty petrol air mix is to RICH weaken the mixture by turning the screw slowly one way or other
