I have seen Wylex plug in MCB fuses to replace the wired type fuses in my Wylex consumer unit I know they will stick out a bit but won't be in the way or get knocked: is the a 'For and against using these in my Wylex c.u.?
Had it all checked before moving in and all including the wired fuse consumer unit was safe but advised to update for ease not for reasons of safety.
Had offer last year Feb for free visual check from a contractor working for our supplier. Testin was a joke polarity test on two sockets then declared wiring ok. [I know it is]. Eyes lit up like organ stops seening the 1970 wired fuse consumer unit. Condemed it as dangerous [it's not it was teste by my mate who is a tester himself] Quote for £810 to change to MCB said it would only take half day so we won't be without elecs for long.... but out of pocket instead. I've seen same unit ranging from £36 - £198 on a range of 4 -12 way units. Is this a Part P rip off or what???
Thanks Rob. I get your drift on Part P regs but why is Screwfix still able to sell stuff like these bayonet type MCB's if they don't conform to regs?.
I am also assuming I will have to contact building control at the council to tell them.
Oh! and electrics were fully tested OK a year ago by my mate who was a highly qualified electrics installation safety tester for a big insurance company,. Sadly he's no longer with us.
Any way I can see its a matter at the most of extending the tails from the meter to the CU at worst if it has to be raised. All cables come from the attic to the CU none from the floor [Bungalow]

plug in m.c.b's are a good alternative to replacing cu because they save the inconvenience of replacing fuse wire. down side is it wont coform to latest regs which requires additional protection by way of an rcd on most circuits. Also old wylex boards have a main switch rated at only 60 amps, and i've not seen many they aren't overloaded. obviously changing consumer unit best answer. will definatly take longer than half a day, the entire installation will need to be tested. sparky needs to b part p registered. i would excpect to pay in the region of £300 to £450 for this work depending what needs to be done to bring you up to latest regs(17th edition).
