Registering a 1100 handset?

I wish to register a BT Studio 1100 GAP handset to a 1500 base.
The display on the handset shows "not registered" when I try to go into "set up" it shows "not available" and when I try to register it it defaults to "BASE 1" but doesn't register.
Anyone know what I should do?
