peugeot 406 1998?

Got in car this morning and tried to start it but nothing. Its been used every day for the last 4yrs no problems. Thing is, the remote locking is now working (it hasn't been for over 2 yrs) and i was wondering if the imobilliser has cut in?? Or could it be that the car can't now read the key?? I've tried disconnecting the car battery for 30mins to see if it all resets but still nothing. Local pug dealer says a reprogram will cost £45 but i need to take the car as well..... fat chance...

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm running out of ideas..
