Timer Recording On Sony RDRHXD955 DVD Recorder?

Hi,
How can you change the programme position when recording ?
What I mean is, that if you set a timed recording, you have to watch that channel during the recording. If you try to change the channel it comes up with 'stop recording'. It seems that unless you watch the programme you can't record it, this can't be right, can it ?
