why won't my sony trinitron 5yrold t.v. stay on,and timer turn off?

my sony trinitron t.v. which is about 5yrs. old is not coming on like it is suppose to. a little red light blinks in the front of the t.v. which says it is a timer. if the screen shows up, it goes blank after a moment. could you please tell me how to turn off the timer(red blinking light in front) and why the picture will not stay on?

I think the blinking is telling you a fault is present (Sony are known for this) and the location of the problem is indicated by the sequence of blinking (code) and the service manual would be required to determin the problem.
It may just be something silly like a bad connection but will require investigation.
