Potterton Netaheat 1-16 MkIIF heats up water but not the heating?

It was working fine yesterday and today I put the hot water on and it fired fine, nice hot water no probs. But it won't fire up when I put the heating on. The thermostat is up enough for it to click on and the Honeywell electronic timer is set to on as well, but I'm getting nothing from the boiler. We only moved in a year ago so I have no history on whether it's been checked or serviced recently/regularly. I've bled the rads and no air came out though the small rad in the hall has never worked and it's stuck fast - can't turn it on or bleed it. No upstairs rads as this is a ground floor flat! Can anyone advise any checks I can make before I call a professional? I'm going to need laymans terms

Sounds like the motorised valve has a problem mate.If its the synchron motor that can be changed without draining the system off.Synchron motors are only about a tenner,but a complete new valve could be expensive as the drain down will cost a bit.You really need a second opinion first to make sure we are right in he diagnosis.Sorry it aint worked for you mate.

Yes there was resistance. I forced it into the lock position and it just kept clanging at me. When I let go of the lever it popped out of the locked position (!) and down into auto again and continued to clang. The clanging only stopped once I switched the heating off. If I switch the heating on again, the clanging starts again!

When you pushed it was there some resistance.If there was and you definitely had the heating in the on position it sounds like the synchron motor has gone.You should be able to lock it in position but may have to bend the arm into the lock position.

Thanks Tony. I checked the motorised valve in that I pushed the metal lever up from the auto position to the manual position, it wouldn't lock in place and kept clicking at me, forcing itself back down into the auto position. In the tank cupboard, where is the lever on the side that gives resistance, what does it look like?

You may have a motorised valve that has failed.Check in the tank cupboard.If it has failed the lever on the side will give a resistance.For temporary heating you can manually push the lever and lock it in position and the boiler should fire up.If this does work then you will need a new synchron motor inside the motorised valve.
