Mend Air Central System

Why is my forced air via gas central heating system so loud?

I have central Heat and AC via forced air by natural gas. I have two returns and several smaller outlets. When temperature goes below what I have set the system kicks on but it is sooo loud and keeps us up at night. My feeling is that the system is 'starving' for air. Can I simply add another return?
