Given its age I would suspect replacement is the most economical answer. It sounds to me like a control issue since the motor that makes it spin and the motor that operates the pump are different.
Before you go that route check it's not something simple like a blocked pump/filter. If the pump can't empty the machine it may be that a sensor is telling the main motor to 'wait' until it has. Disconnect, take the back off and see if you can spin the pump motor with your finger. It usually has a fan on it and you can turn the fan by hand. If the fan won't turn or is stiff it's likely the pump has a 'foreign object' in it!
