My Dewalt DC 988 is smoking?

if you split the drill in half you will see the wires, they come from the switch im sure. things will be more transparent to you then.its quite straight forward and you will have more space to work.good luck

and you will see item # 22 (brush box). It is a whole brush assembly and they will just clip into the motor. Grab a screwdriver and pry the old brush assembly out and replace with a new set item # 603754-01.
